Functional genomics - dissecting the molecular mechanism of disease resistance and other important traits in salmon and cod

Promising results from other work packages, for instance already identified QTLs for important traits, will be subject to fine mapping and functional testing in order to confirm the molecular mechanism behind the trait. The methods used will reflect the nature of the trait and associated genes, including transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis, in vitro and in situ studies, as well as knock-down and knock-out technology. For cod this work will focus on functional testing of genes under selection related to local adaptation, life history traits and environmental conditions, as well as genes related to disease resistance, immune function, growth and sexual maturation. In salmon this work will involve functional testing of QTLs for disease resistance and fillet quality, as well as further studies into the genetic control of sex differentiation.
